Context:

A masterpiece in Korean indie animation, the There She Is!! series was first introduced to me on Newgrounds. It has since been remastered in HD for YouTube, and was neatly wrapped up in its 5th and final episode. However, an opportunity to crowdfund a bonus 6th episode and a DVD of the series arose, and I couldn’t pass it up.

Result:

Digital rewards, including the wallpapers, have been distributed.

The 6th episode premiered exclusively to backers, on Newgrounds, starting from August 15, 2020.

The t-shirt, DVD, and other physical rewards were later sent out, and I even opted for the art book in the store where ordering additional rewards was an option.

Context:

Them’s Fightin’ Herds is the spiritual successor to MLP: Fighting is Magic, which was cancelled due to a cease and desist by Hasbro. HERTZFELDT ON BLU-RAY by don hertzfeldt

Pledged: $34
Rewards: Physical copy of the blu-ray
Kickstarter start date: July 16, 2015
Kickstarter funded on: August 16, 2015
Estimated delivery date: January 2016

Context:

Don Hertzfeldt is an animator who used to focus primarily on making animated cartoons where all the drawings were done on paper (but he does draw digitally now). He has been featured in a couch gag on The Simpsons, but he is mostly known for his short film Rejected. As all the DVDs featuring collections of his short films were sold out, this campaign to create a blu-ray of his work was definitely not one to miss.

Result:

The blu-ray arrived at my place on March 29, 2016.

It contains the full version of It’s Such a Beautiful Day, World of Tomorrow, and his short and student films, all remastered specifically for the blu-ray.

There was also a cardboard insert and mini-booklet about the World of Tomorrow film inside the sleeve.

I tweeted about it here:

Context:

In Garry’s Mod, there is a fun gamemode known as Cinema that lets you watch online videos with other people in the Source engine. There was also the elusive GMOD Tower gamemode that expanded upon this concept with minigames, and it was something which I could never join as the servers were always so far away and the ping would be unbearable. When the creators of these two gamemodes announced a spiritual successor in the Unreal engine and local Australian and dedicated servers, I was ready to back it.

Result:

Tower Unite was released on Steam Early Access on April 9, 2016.

On the 14th of June 2018, it was just updated to version 0.5.0.0

Shenmue 3 was released on November 20, 2019. First promised as a Steam release, it came as an Epic Games Store key first, with the option to also get an additional Steam key offered via a survey.

Kickstarter start date: May 01, 2015
Kickstarter funded on: June 17, 2015
Estimated delivery date: October 2016

Context:

I didn’t really grow up with Banjo-Kazooie, but I did play a lot of Donkey Kong Country, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, and Viva Piñata – and those were really fun. So obviously when these ex-Rare developers announced a spiritual successor to their Banjo games, I decided to take a stab in the perfect dark (heh) and make this the first crowdfunding project I pledged money towards.

Result:

Yooka-Laylee was released on PC and multiple consoles on April 11, 2017.

To find NeonWabbit’s name in the credits:

After opening the game, head to the Options & Stuff menu where you can access the credits. Navigate the credits using the on-screen controls.

Patreon for Hioshiru

Pledged: $10 per month
Rewards: Thank you, High resolution files, Exclusive 18+ content, Monthly sketch packs, Video speedpaints, Voting in polls
Patreon start date: March 23, 2015

Context:

Hioshiru is a Russian artist who makes quality furry and MLP-related art. I figured I could learn a thing or two from her video speedpaints and high-resolution files, so I decided to support her Patreon beginning in mid-2018.

Result:

Hioshiru posts Patreon-exclusive content fairly regularly, and I felt like I got my money’s worth. After a year, I cancelled my subscription due to a financial situation.
